A second family on Johns Island
Your dog runs for our gate and forgets to look back. That is the whole point of this place. Chucktown Charley is where Charleston dogs come to play hard, rest well, make real friends, and keep growing up into the happiest version of themselves, week after week, year after year. Here is how it started, and who your dog gets to spend their days with.
Two Charleston girls and a lifetime of dogs
Allison and Janie have known each other almost their whole lives. Thirty-eight years later, they run two businesses under one roof, but it started the way most good things do: with two Charleston kids who loved animals.
Allison went to Charleston Southern for a degree in behavioral science, thinking she had people figured out. Then she brought home a puppy and had to face something first: she was afraid of dogs. Not a just a little. Her heart dog, Hadley, changed that. Working through Hadley’s behavioral struggles one small win at a time turned fear into fascination, and fascination into a life’s work. Two decades later, Allison owns Well Mannered Dog, the training company she built and ran on her own for fifteen years. Turns out, learning to read people made her even better at reading dogs.
Janie started at seventeen, bathing dogs in a grooming salon, and never really left. She worked boarding kennels and veterinary hospitals, learning every corner of what a dog needs, and eventually ran the salon where she’d begun. In 2012 she bought a kennel of her own with a simple dream: a place where dogs were truly looked after, body and heart.
Then their paths crossed again, this time professionally, and it wasn’t a business meeting so much as two old friends realizing they’d been building toward the same thing all along. Allison needed somewhere the dogs she’d trained could keep growing, somewhere that cared for a dog’s heart as carefully as its body. Janie wanted every dog in her charge to feel calm, make friends, and go home happy. The same dream, said two ways. So they joined forces for good: Janie came on as co-owner of Well Mannered Dog, Allison as co-owner of Chucktown Charley. Two businesses, one roof, one friendship thirty-eight years deep, built to carry a dog through their whole life.
“Something wonderful is about to happen”
The first thing you read when you walk through our door.
What we’re about
Here is the whole idea in one breath: we make dogs happier and more emotionally sound, and then we help you keep them that way. A day at Chucktown Charley’s is built around good manners, real socialization, and the kind of steady, low-drama learning that actually sticks. Dogs play in well-matched groups, rest when it is time to rest, and practice the skills that make life with them easier and sweeter. It is a boutique pet retreat, and a learning experience, but mostly it is the place your dog throws themselves into every morning and cannot wait to get back to.
Because we care about that calm, every dog joins through training first with our sister company, Well Mannered Dog. It is the one thing we ask, and it is the reason the yards feel the way they do.
Care with a standard behind it.
The crew at the gate
The people who greet your dog by name every morning, know their best friends, and sometimes text you the photo you did not know you needed.
“The folks at CC treat him so well, and he absolutely adores all of them. I am so grateful that I have a place he can stay, learn, and play that loves him and cares for him like their own.”
